The Jukskei River Walk

This walk along the banks of the Jukskei River in Alexandra will take around one and a half hours, with conference participants accompanied by guides and local artists. Artist Hannelie Warrington-Coetzee, in association with the Alexandra Water Warriors, the Johannesburg Inner City Partnership (JICP), World Resources Institute (WRI), International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and SUNCASA, has designed a series of litter traps with the Alex-based Kula Marolen Foundation along the river to catch or reroute litter and river debris. In addition, along the river Hannelie has lead the building of a range of sculptures from river debris. This unique combination of art and engineering highlights the agility of a transdisciplinary approach to environmental challenges. You will go to Alex on a bus, and limited places are available: consequently advance registration is essential. Please note you should wear comfortable walking shoes, apply sunscreen and bring water.
